A Quick Guide to Municipal Financial Statements

Alberta Municipal Affairs has developed a short guide to assist municipal officials and other stakeholders to interpret the financial statements.  A set of customizable slides is also available for download and is intended to be used for presenting the financial statements.

2011 Municipal Financial Reporting

The Municipal Government Act requires that every Alberta municipality prepare a Financial Information Return and annual audited financial statements. A copy of each must be submitted to Alberta Municipal Affairs by May 1 of each year.

The financial information return template should be submitted electronically via e-mail to lgs.update@gov.ab.ca. A signed and dated paper copy of the Financial Information Return and the annual audited financial statements, including the auditors report, should be mailed to:

Financial Information Return

The 2011 financial information return template and the accompanying manual are now available for downloading. The financial information return templates require Microsoft Excel Version 7 or newer to complete.

Annual Financial Statements

Sample financial statements (New Sampleford), including a summary of recent Public Sector Accounting Board Recommendations, are available for reference purposes in the preparation of the 2010 financial statements.
